L.A. Brown Photography

Lisa Anne Brown is an intuitive photographer and artist.

"The investment of time reveals its gifts over time; the joy is in the moment. If I am present, the future will take care of itself.”

-L.A. Brown

Born in Morristown, New Jersey at the tender age of 12, Lisa became immersed in art. In all her schooling at Kent Place School, Providence College, and The New England School of Photography; she was intrigued with all things artistic. Living in New Jersey she was lucky to have the museums of Manhattan close and was able to venture into the city for many important exhibitions.

As she immersed herself in art this opportunity helped Lisa narrow her scope of art to painting and photography; a combination that would be a deep and constant thread throughout her career. In particular, the poetic artistry of Andrew Wyeth and the decisive moments of Henri Cartier-Bresson touched Lisa’s evolving artistic eye.

As the business aspect of her chosen career unfolded, Lisa chose her initials as her name. Lisa (Anne) became L.A. she felt it was best that there was no gender associated with her work; it was a good choice. In later years, she would have a chuckle when, while sitting at her exhibitions, she would hear viewers refer to her as him… “ Oh, I know this guy, he is from Martha’s Vineyard.”

Lisa’s photography is intuitive. At any given moment she intuitively chooses a specific technique. She has rolled with all the technical transitions of the photographic world, transitioning from film to digital while keeping the integral spirit of her work. She would feel the essence of the scene and in that instant let go of a creative impulse guiding her choices of lens, stance, and light, illuminating the scene in such a way that the soul of the picture emerged.

For 40 years, Martha’s Vineyard has been essential to Lisa’s creativity. Despite my many photographic adventures around the world, she continues to make the Vineyard her home. It is a place where she finds peace and inspiration. Lisa finds joy in her images that discovers a simple truth that leaves a lasting impression.
